Another day, another year, we are still here to complete the daily, weekly, monthly and annual awesome tasks of Activities Directors. We are expected to continue to motivate, inspire and advocate on behalf of our residents. As I look back at 2019, it became apparent to me that in order to provide the highest quality of inclusive and interactive activities, we need to be kind. The definition of kindness is “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” Affection, gentleness, warmth, concern, and care are all words that are associated with kindness.  While kindness has a connotation of meaning someone is naive or weak, that is not the case. Being kind often requires courage and strength. How many times have you applied all these attributes into the creation of activities at your facility? We are traditionally wired to make resolutions during the first month of the year then forget about it as early as the second week in February. This year, I challenge you to perform intentional acts of kindness through-out the year. It may be in the form of a kind word or action. Ask the department heads of your facility to get involve. Ask them to also challenge their team members. My goal for this year, is to perform six intentional acts of kindness daily throughout the year. I plan to create a kindness journal for myself and I will evaluate my intentional kindness acts every weekend to see if I accomplish my kindness goals. I will challenge everyone at my facility to do the same. Let this year’s theme be, “I don’t need a reason to be kind.” Happy New Year.

CONTRIBUTED by HRAPA

We held our annual social Thursday, January 9, 2020 at the Mango Mangeaux restaurant in Phoebus. It was a wonderful time to visit and make some plans for the next meeting. The food was wonderful and thank you to those who were able to attend. We held our drawing for the free VAAP conference which was given to new members of BOTH VAAP and HRAPA.  Icesoline Lindsey-Carter is the recipient. We also drew for a free conference among attendees at the annual luncheon and longtime HRAPA member, Kirsty Saunders-Bonani was the recipient of that drawing. HRAPA is proud to host the upcoming VAAP conference March 24-27, 2020 and are looking forward to the educational opportunities that will be available.

HRAPA will also comping memberships for the year 2020. If you would like to give the local group a try, please send me an email and I will send you an application. We would love to increase membership and increase networking opportunities for activity professionals in our District.  My email is tinagu3@hotmail.com Tina Guthrie, President of HRAPA.

Our next meeting will be held at Providence Place Maryview in Portsmouth on February 13th at 12pm. Please note that we have changed the time for this meeting in hopes that more people will be able to attend over lunch. Lunch will be provided. We will be sending out an email to get feedback on the possibility of changing the day we meet as well, to accommodate more people. The address is 1 Bon Secours Way, Portsmouth. It is now time to RENEW your membership with VAAP.  Your dues MUST be paid in order to receive the MEMBER price for the annual VAAP Conference coming up March 24-27, 2020.  With less than two months away, you won’t want to wait until the last minute to get your renewals submitted.  Those of you that joined AFTER June of 2019, automatically were renewed through December 2020 as a courtesy as VAAP changed its member year to match the calendar year (January – December).

The VAAP 2020 Conference is coming up fast. I would like to ask that all the districts contribute to a power point we would like to put together.

  1. Ask all of the activity professionals in your group to write on a piece of construction paper/poster board their best “piece of advice” to other activity professionals. Decorate if you want, and take a photo of the person along with their advice.
  2. Send the pictures to me, Tina Guthrie at tinagu3@hotmail.com
  3. These pictures will be used to put together a power point program that will be shown at the conference.

The reason for this project is people have so much knowledge that we do not share with one another. We think that there is such a wealth of advice that we can share with others in the activity field. Those of us who have been in the field for a while have a different perspective and although we have a lot to share so do the newer activity professionals. I know that several times I have asked for advice from other activity professionals and I love the advice I have received over the years. Please send along those photos with your best advice or two if you have extra.
